Portfolio/Past Work
It may seem as if my work is all over the place without a central style or theme, or even industry. And that’s because I have a myriad of interests and I like to learn and explore new things all the time. I see my style or theme as “Eclectic, Folksy, and Flexible.” Everyone sees me as a typical artist type, but technically, in terms of testing and left brain/right brain types of things, I am right in the middle. I am more of a creative engineer than an artsy free spirit. I like to dismantle things, figure out how they work, and then put them back together again - mostly figuratively, but sometimes literally. I have taught myself just about everything I know by reverse engineering, and by the ability to see in my mind’s eye how something has been built, painted, assembled…etc. This page is a work in progress so please bear with me. If you want to see art examples right now, see my Instagram. You may have to view quite a ways back to see different forms of art I have done as it changes over the years. In terms of my technical background, you can find that toward the bottom of the page here with more specific details on my LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tarafinlayart/
Digital Illustration in Procreate App
Digital art has come a long long way from the clunky pixelated art of the early 00s. My favorite thing to do is create designs and illustrations in the Procreate App for iPad using the Apple Pencil with “brushes,” textures, and effects I have created myself for use within the app, as well as commercially available brushes and textures that are indistinguishable from “the real thing.” If this sounds like Greek to you, an example would be I would use a real ink brayer and real paper to deposit ink on the paper, scan that into my ipad, import it into Procreate, and use that as my ink for my digital linoleum cut prints. The “linoleum cutter” in this case is a digital eraser I created for my Apple Pencil, which mimics the way a real linoleum cutter would cut lino and leave texture in the cutting. Why would someone do this rather than just doing it the traditional way? Well, there is no waste, no microplastics going into the water system, no paper gets wasted because you can erase infinitely in a digital environment without damaging your “paper.” But another benefit is that if someone has arthritis, or poor eyesight, or no art studio, digital art can be easier on the hands, easier on the eyes, and easier on the budget once the initial purchase of iPad, Apple Pencil, and software. If you are an artist who can’t cut lino anymore due to hand pain, or want to paint but you can’t do so comfortably at an easel or desk, and need to be in a wheelchair, recliner, etc, the iPad and Procreate can really open up your world. I offer lessons and help tailored to your specific needs. See “Work with Tara” for more information.

Website Design/Maintenance/Updating/Graphics/Video Editing, and Social Media
I know my way around HTML and CSS but have spent the past decade mostly working with pre-existing Wordpress sites, Squarespace, Wix, etc, that were designed by others. I maintained the Woo Commerce e-commerce online class offerings of one of the Maine State Department of Adult Education’s programs, troubleshooting any issues that arose, and then calling on programming experts if the problems were in the coding and not on the user end.
I am currently maintaining a Dreamhost site and Facebook/Instagram/Youtube Channel for a local dance non-profit as a volunteer. I designed their logo and edit photos and videos for them as well as creating custom graphics for their social media.
I’ve updated old, pixelated logos for companies who no longer had their original files, designed T-shirts, logos, and other graphics for print and web for a variety of companies, many of which no longer exist. I will link to some examples of these various graphics soon.
-Updated Logo For Smithwick Machine
-Created Logo for Binghamton English Country Dancers
-Created slogan for bumperstickers and T-shirts for GreenTree Soil.
-Custom illustration of an old early 19th century painting for Country Dance group.
-Video Editing for Country Dance group as well as my own youtube channel including all thumbnail graphics.
-Video Editing for my Skillshare classes including all thumbnails.
Documentation/Process Mapping/Proofreading
I have helped to design an application to support the process of documentation and revision approvals in an ISO-certified manufacturing organization, mapped software development processes and other business processes, and even proofread a fictional novel. Turns out I was the 5th proofreader and I still found a large number of errors. It’s my superpower.
Technology/Hardware/Software
I am most comfortable in Windows/Android environments rather than Apple, except for the iPad, which I use extensively in my daily life. I have administered Windows servers, supported mixed Windows/Mac environments where Windows machines were the norm, and have supported basic desktop and cloud office applications, custom third-party software such as production tools for bakeries and manufacturers, and am adept at teaching myself software quickly in order to then support the end user.
